Challenge
Matthew McLemore, founder of BMM, joined the project on his hire date, charged with accelerating production to meet a shortened deadline set by business development while designing a polished user experience for both iPhone and iPad. He was tasked with transforming a data-dense, multi-sport application into an elegant, user-friendly digital product that appeals to fans across platforms, all within tight time constraints. As one of the lead designers for the CBS All Sports app—a 550-screen application covering football, baseball, basketball, college basketball, college football, tennis, and auto racing—he revised production plans and introduced techniques to speed delivery, including Photoshop scripting to streamline workflows.
Process
Matthew collaborated with sports experts to interpret the product development brief, then assisted in crafting information architecture and wireframes focused on delighting sports fans and ensuring a coherent, enjoyable user journey across devices. He decomposed each screen into individual Photoshop documents and produced a detailed production schedule to coordinate a rotating team of freelancers, maintaining momentum and design consistency. Helping to lead the freelance team, he provided hands-on mentorship in technical Photoshop workflows, shortcuts, and scripting practices to accelerate output and maintain quality against the compressed timeline..
Results
Matthew helped deliver the CBS All Sports app, which reached #1 in the App Store for over 60 days and became one of the most downloaded sports apps in App Store history at launch. The app’s success reflected his leadership in streamlining the production process and effective team coordination, achieving a high-quality, cross-device experience under aggressive deadlines.
